How Rob and Rose turned a busy Ocean City seafood restaurant into a proving ground for safer floors — and took their remedy nationwide to assist all industries with
For more than 20 years, hungry customers have walked through the doors of On the Bay Seafood in Ocean City, Maryland. Crabs get cracked, drinks get spilled, kitchens run full speed and floors get wet. For most restaurant owners, that is just part of the job. For Rob and Rose, it was a problem worth solving.
"There is always a better way" is the motto behind Pioneer Concepts, the company the duo built from their own dining room. When something goes wrong at the restaurant, they invent a fix, test it hard on their own floors, and only then offer it to everyone else. That hands-on approach has earned them 8 U.S. patents, with more pending, and a feature in Inventors Digest Magazine's Inventor Spotlight.
A single slip and fall can mean an injured guest or employee, a lawsuit, and an insurance claim that follows a business for years. Rob and Rose saw two weak spots. The ordinary caution cone just sits there in silence, and people walk right past it — especially anyone who is blind or simply not looking. And a string mop can leave a floor wet for five minutes or more: a fall waiting to happen.
Their first answer is the Safety Illuminator, the first smart, ADA-compliant audio caution cone. Equipped with a motion sensor, when activated it sets off blinking yellow lights and an audio "Caution wet floor" warning. It comes in four models, from the free-standing Grab n Go to wall and ceiling mounts.
Their second answer is KleenzDRI, an all-natural, ready-to-use cleaner that dries in 10 seconds or less. Used with a flat mop and a fresh dry pad for every area, it leaves floors clean and dry almost instantly and helps stop cross-contamination. In lab testing it lifted 99.98% of MRSA and 99.96% of E. coli from surfaces. Together, the cone warns and the cleaner dries — turning minutes of risk into seconds.
Thank you
When the summer season ends, Rob and Rose head to their 200-acre ranch in the New Mexico mountains, where they feed elk and cut and split firewood to deliver free to families in need through their own charity, Warming Homes for the Holidays. The duo also spends a lot of time with their super smart partners, Martin and Joyce, at their shop, where they manufacture the smart cone in house for the highest quality.
Then they hit the road, bringing their American-made products to hospitals, hotels, schools, airports and government facilities. For these two, safety isn't a slogan. It's something they prove every day on their own floors.
